Application Checklist for Master of Deaf Education and Hearing Science

Application Period

DEHS Program Applications may be submitted throughout the year

Application deadline March 15 for Summer semester entry (Contact the program director to be considered for entry at a different time.)

Checklist for the Master of Deaf Education and Hearing Science Program

All checked items listed below are required for a complete application.  If items are missing, your application may not be processed.

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, special education, deaf education, deaf studies, communication disorders, or related field
  • Grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better in bachelor’s degree
  • Completion of all program prerequisites with a grade of “B” or better.  Click here for prerequisites.
  • Completed application (click here for Texas Common Application).

Submit the following materials and documents to the Registrar at the address above, before the application deadline:

  • $45 application fee – On-line payment, or check or money order sent to the Registrar at the address above. Write your application number on the check or money order to assure proper processing. Your application cannot be processed without payment being received by the deadline date.
  • Official transcripts from every college or university you have attended – If official transcripts are sent to you, you may send them to the Registrar if the seal on the envelope is not broken.
  • Three (3) reference forms – Individuals providing references should mail recommendations directly to the Registrar.  Click here to download or print reference forms.
  • Personal Statement – A 300-500 word typed statement that may include the personal qualities that will make you a good professional in deaf education and hearing science, your reasons for seeking the degree, and examples of problem-solving or team efforts that speak to your qualifications for the program
  • Personal Resume – Including work experience, honors and awards, extracurricular organizations and activities, employment history, and community service
  • Teaching Certificate or License – Mail a copy of your teaching certificate or license.  See instructions below if you do not hold a certificate or license.
  • Documentation of Experience – Non-education applicants will need to document 50 classroom observation hours with children under the age of 10. If you have observation hours with children outside of the classroom from your undergraduate degree or work experience, those hours may be substituted for up to 25 hours of non-classroom observation.  Click here to download or print an Observation Log.   • Graduate Record Examination scores (GRE) – GRE scores are not currently used in making program acceptance decisions
  • Prerequisite Course Exemption/ Transfer Credit Form (if required) – Applicants may be exempted from a prerequisite or program course by passing the final examination for a course and earning a grade of “B” or better.  The request must be submitted at the time of application.  Click here to download or print an exemption form.
  • TOEFL score (Test of English as a Foreign Language) – Required only of international applicants from countries where English is not the native language; minimum score of 68 (Internet), 220 (computer), or 560 (paper) is required.
  • International Transcript Evaluation (international students, only) – Transcripts of coursework taken at colleges/universities outside the United States must be submitted to the Registrar, along with a course-by-course evaluation by an approved credentialing organization.  For more information, click here.

Applicants without a Teaching Certificate or License

In addition to the items above, submit the following to the Registrar at the address above

  • Classroom Observation Experience – At least 50 hours of observation in a classroom with children under the age of 10 years, with at least 3 different teachers.  Document your observations using the Classroom Observation Questionnaire and the Classroom Observation Log.  Preference for scholarships is given to applicants who have completed this requirement by the time of application. 
  • Volunteer Activity or Employment With Children – At least 30 hours of volunteer activity or employment with children under the age of 10 in daycare, camps, scouts, religious groups or schools, etc.  To document your experiences:  (1) Keep a journal that includes a reflective diary of observations and experiences and (2) provide documentation of hours from each site supervisor using the Documentation of Field Experience Log.  Submit your journal and log by enrollment date (not application date).
  • Texas Higher Education Assessment Scores (THEA) – You must have passing scores on the THEA in order to register for coursework in the DEHS program.  All students seeking admission to a state-approved Texas educator program or alternative teacher certification program are required to demonstrate college-level skills in reading, oral and written communication, mathematics, and critical thinking.  The THEA was formerly named TASP (Texas Academic Skills Program).  Click here for more information on the THEA.
