Frequently Asked Questions

What can the Allied Health Welcome Center do for me?
The Allied Health Welcome Center wants to create awareness of allied health professions and all allied health professions programs offered at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. We take pride in providing individualized academic counseling so you will have the tools to make informed decisions about your career goals. We can provide unofficial transcript evaluations, give you insight into the interview process for your program of choice and help identify alternative plans to career choices if needed. We have also posted many resources on our web page to help serve your needs, including equivalency sheets and a self-help checklist to streamline the application process.

How can I make an appointment for academic counseling?
You may send an e-mail to AHwelcome@uthscsa.edu or call Toll Free (866) 802-6288 or (210) 567-8744 to reach our office.

Do I have to make an appointment to speak to a counselor?
It isnt necessary to make an appointment, but we will be able to serve you better if we can schedule enough time to meet your needs.

How can I get my transcripts evaluated?
The best method for transcript evaluation is to fax or e-mail transcripts. Our office does an unofficial evaluation so you need not provide official transcripts to us. We need only copies. Please be sure to include a cover sheet stating that you would like an unofficial transcript evaluation for the program you are interested in applying for. Please allow 2 to 3 weeks for this process.

Can you provide me with my GPA calculation?
Please ask, as we can provide GPA calculations for some programs.

How can I find out if a course I took is going to satisfy your prerequisite course?
Phone or e-mail with your request. We have posted many Texas college equivalency sheets on our web page. You may find what you are looking for there. In some cases, we will need for you to provide a course description from the catalog if we are unable to make a determination just by the course number and name.

Does a grade of "D" transfer into any of the Allied Health Sciences programs?
No, all prerequisite coursework must be completed with a "C" or better.

How can I find out if I’m competitive for a program?
Our individualized counseling sessions are structured to provide you with that information and we can help with suggestions to make you more competitive. We can give insight on making you a viable candidate for the program, give applicant and admission statistics and offer alternatives to your first program choice in the interim, if necessary.

Do you accept CLEP and DANTES course credit?
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) are popular programs that allow college and university students and military personnel to “test out” of many courses. The School of Allied Health Sciences accepts CLEP and DANTES credits for many Texas Core Curriculum requirements and some program prerequisites if the student earns a satisfactory score on examinations. For more information on courses that may be “clepped” and minimum scores for the examinations, click here.

What if I have a felony conviction on my record? Can I still be admitted?
An important point to consider is whether you can obtain a certificate/license from a licensing board for your program of interest. You would do well to contact the appropriate agency before making application to the program.

What type of references do I need?
References should be from present or past employers, professors you have had in college or health care professionals. A reference should be able to comment on your professional attitude and capabilities, and should have observed you in a school or work environment. Do not use relatives or personal friends.

I am an applicant who has attended a portion of college in a foreign country. Is there anything special I need to do to get an evaluation of my transcripts?
Have a Foreign Transcript Evaluation completed by one of the approved services listed on our International Student link before we can start processing an unofficial evaluation. You will need to send us the foreign transcript evaluation along with copies of all transcripts from colleges you have attended.

When I do apply, does it matter if my transcripts, references, and other documents arrive before my application gets there?
No, the Registrar’s Office keeps incoming information in an alphabetical file. When an application comes in, they access the alphabetical file and match materials to the application. However, a application materials and documents must arrive at the Registrar's Office by the application deadline (or CASPA, for Physician Assistant Studies).

I tried to complete the Texas Common Application online and the program I want to apply for is not one of the choices. What do I do?
This happens because the application period for that program has not opened yet for the new cycle, or the application deadline for that program has passed. If you do experience prolonged difficulties with the application, please contact the Registrar’s Office at (210) 567-2660 for help.

Who do I contact to find out if my application packet is complete?
Contact the Allied Health Admissions in the Office of the Registrar at ahprospect@uthscsa.edu or (210) 567-2660.
